Clearing of agricultural land in the Al-Batin area

7/10/2019

Approximately 10 000 square meters of agricultural land were destroyed in the Al-Batin area, located west of the village of Farkha. Among these lands, 4000 square meters had recently been cultivated as part of a project funded by the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) in cooperation with the Palestinian Ministry of Agriculture. The land is owned by citizen Hassan Abdullah Hassan Hajaj, who supports his family of five. As a result of this intrusion, about 100 olive, grape, and fig trees were uprooted, in addition to the destruction of an iron gate, fencing, and stone walls, as well as the vandalism of a well that was under construction. The aggression did not stop there; a military order numbered 392671 was issued to evacuate part of this land on the pretext that it is government property.

The settler gangs continued their attacks on agricultural lands in Salfit Governorate, where they completely destroyed an agricultural irrigation network in the Al-Mutawi area, northwest of the city, as part of a systematic policy aimed at tightening the noose on farmers and emptying the area of its original inhabitants.

The attack targeted agricultural land belonging to farmer Bassam Abdul Aziz Rizq Allah, a resident of the village of Farkha, where the irrigation network was cut and destroyed over an estimated area planted with molokhia.

The Al-Mutawi area is considered one of the most important agricultural spaces in Salfit and has historically been known as the “food basket” for the city and its neighboring villages due to its springs and natural water sources. These violations come amid a noticeable increase in bulldozing and the construction of settler roads linking the Ariel settlement to the new outpost “Shoval Farm,” established on the lands of the village of Farkha.

At around 2 AM, the occupation forces stormed the eastern neighborhood in the village of Farkha and raided the home of citizen Hassan Al-Shaer and his sons. A serious precedent was recorded with the presence of settlers alongside soldiers during the home raid. They beat the citizen while transferring him to the Yekir settlement before handing him over to Ariel police following a complaint filed by one of the settlers from the extremist Shoval outpost.

After half an hour, two farmers and their children came to work on their land to discover that two olive trees had been cut down, with the timing of the attack unknown. Within minutes, the two settlers returned with sheep on the same piece of land, and when the farmers tried to drive them away, one of the settlers fired a random shot.

This was followed by the arrival of a new group of five settlers, all wearing white shirts, who infiltrated among the olive trees in an organized and very rapid manner, indicating a premeditated and planned operation. Upon their discovery, the farmers were forced to leave their lands because at least two of the settlers were armed, and the army was present in the area waiting for the crime to occur.

After ten minutes, a military jeep arrived from the same outpost from which the settlers had come, accompanied by an extremist settler named (Koki), who established the Shoval settlement outpost and has previous documented attacks on farmers. Instead of dealing with the assailants, the occupation forces detained ten farmers for two hours and arrested three of them at the request of the aforementioned (Koki) and the minor settlers from the army. They were released the same evening after interrogation and being accused of assaulting minor settlers.

What happened today is an organized terrorist trap aimed at preventing the locals from accessing their lands and intimidating them with new and dangerous methods, carried out under the direct protection of the occupation forces.

These repeated attacks, which include shooting, tree cutting, and preventing grazing and farming, represent a serious escalation in the policy of settlement and forced displacement, targeting the uprooting of the Palestinian people from their land just as the olive trees are uprooted.

Today, Friday, October 3, Zionist settlers forced ten families to leave their agricultural lands in the village of Farka, west of Salfit, and prevented them from harvesting olives, under the protection of the Israeli occupation forces.
The head of the Farka Village Council, Mustafa Hamad, told WAFA that the village council and the agricultural committee had organized an early voluntary day for olive harvesting after settlers, about a week ago, began breaking olive trees and stealing olives.
He added that residents went to their lands located northwest of the village in the areas of al-Safha, al-Munqa’a, and Batn al-Shami, only to find that olives had been stolen and sheep were grazing on their fields.
Mustafa Hamad indicated that settlers attempted to assault the residents, which led to a young man suffering a broken nose after being beaten. He was transferred to Yasser Arafat Hospital in Salfit, before more than ten families were forcibly removed from their lands.
In a related development, fires broke out on citizens’ agricultural lands along the Maṭwi Road, which connects the cities of Salfit and Burqin to the west, near the RAS settlement. The cause of the fires has not yet been determined.
